Progress Isn’t Always Linear
Sometimes we consider progress to be a straight line. It’s a tidy way to think about it: everything is predictable and moving upward, like climbing a ladder, but life rarely works that way.
Right now, we’re in the middle of moving our lives from one van to another, a process that’s neither glamorous or easy. It’s messy, frustrating, and a little exhausting. There are endless small decisions, but we’re making progress. It just doesn’t look like a straight line.
⸻
We tend to measure growth by obvious milestones: a promotion, a new home, a completed project. But more often than not, real progress is subtle and almost invisible. It’s the small steps that feel insignificant at the moment, moving clothes and cutlery, learning to live in a new space, feeling like everything is in chaos. These tiny actions accumulate and compound quietly until, one day, you look around and realise you’ve moved on further than you thought possible.
Life moves in loops, detours, and zig-zags. Sometimes you feel like you’re taking a step backward, yet those moments often lay the foundation for future jumps forward. Pauses, sideways moves, and even hurdles can give you perspective, clarity, and momentum you wouldn’t have gained otherwise.
⸻
This is true in every major transition: starting a new job, moving house, learning a new skill, or making a lifestyle change. They all come with a period of uncertainty and discomfort. Those in-between moments can be messy, but they’re also where most of life actually happens. We don’t post on social media about the difficult bits; we post about the milestones l, the finished projects, the shiny achievements.
The reality is that momentum matters far more than perfection. If you keep moving, even if it’s not perfect, you are making progress. You are learning, adapting, and growing.
⸻
One of the hardest things about non-linear progress is patience. In a culture obsessed with “instant results” and success, it’s easy to feel stuck when you can’t see the next milestone. But progress is often quiet and subtle, it’s the things you don’t notice, like the way you’ve adapted to a new situation, the confidence you’ve built, or the resilience you’ve developed without even realising it.
Think back to the last time you learned something new. The first day, you were unsure. The next day, a little better. After a few days, it started to click. Months later, when you look back, you realise how far you’ve come.
⸻
So if your life feels messy, awkward, or uncertain right now, take heart. You are moving, even when it doesn’t feel like it. The steps may not be straight, and it might not make sense. But every small step, hurdle, or tangent is part of the same process.
Momentum counts, not perfection. You grow while your life bounces around. Things rarely move in straight lines.
Life isn’t a ladder. It’s a winding path with hills, fences, and obstacles to navigate, and that’s exactly where growth happens.
So embrace the diversions and trust the process. Keep moving, you’re making progress, even if you can’t see it yet.

The reality is that momentum matters far more than perfection. If you keep moving, even if it’s not perfect, you are making progress. You are learning, adapting, and growing.
So true!
Vanlifer here too ;)
Thanks for writing down your thoughts. Resonates very much with me. And it not always being a straight line is a pretty good analogy for life in general.
